2 Barnum, P. T. Funny Stories
London G. Routledge and Sons 1890 First Edition Hardcover Good+
8vo 8" - 9" tall; 374 pages; HC in publisher's pictorial red cloth. 1st UK edition. Cover board embellished with decorative Victorian title lettering, circus vignette and portrait all stamped in black. Pictorial title design to spine in gilt and black. Soundly bound, though moderately cocked in the spine. Cloth at spine sunned and fading but with title lettering still reasonably bright and distinct. Mild fray to cloth at crown of the spine panel. Front board has a mild splatter of mottling to the cloth - not discolored. Endpages lightly toned, possibly from the addition of clippings or articles no longer present. Prior owner was clearly not a Barnum enthusiast; above the title on the title page he has penciled, "Thundering Bosh! ! !" In answer to the Lavater epigram on the title page, Shun the man who never laughs, the prior owner has penciled "or the man who laughs at these stories!" A solidly bound copy with clean contents and moderately worn and stressed externals. G++ to VG-
