16 Hasegawa, T. & T. H. James (Trans. ) & Sensei Eitaku The Princes Fire-flash & Fire-fade Japanese Fairy Tale Series, No. 14
Tokyo Kobunsha: 2. Minami Saegi-Cho 1887 Second Edition Paperback Good
24mo 5" - 6" tall; 1887 Kobunsha: 2. Minami Saegi-Cho. Tokyo. By appearances the 2nd edition with 1887 colophon and the 2nd format with larger and improved woodblock images. Small size 4 x 6 inches in crepe paper, bound with stabbed silk cord sewn thread. Front cover toned and soil darkened with illustration and title lettering dimmed and dulled. There are shallow/moderate sized chips torn from the lower front corner of the final 5 leaves - with some loss of a letter ot two to words in the final line or two of text on a page and some minor loss in the lower front corner of woodblocked images. Covers lightly rubbed at edges. An unusual example with publication and printing details conforming to an 1887 printing but bound in the crepe paper generally seen in printings of 1889/90. George Baxley has some reference work on an 1889 reprinting reusing the 1886 colophon and plates but generally bound western style and not stabbed as in this example. With damage to lower corner of last several leaves - thus Good only

17 Hasegawa, T. (Publisher) & David Thompson (Trans. ) & Sensei Eitaku (Illustrator) Shitakiri Suzume; (the Tongue-cut Sparrow) Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 2
Tokyo Kobunsha: 2. Minami Saegi-Cho 1886 Second Edition Paperback Very Good-
Color woodcuts; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 1886 Kobunsha: 2. Minami Saegi-Cho, Tokyo. Stated 2nd edition. Small size 10 x 15 cm. An unusaul example printed on crepe paper dated 1886 with cover title in transliterated phonetic Japanese (Shitakiri Suzume) with colophon on the verso of the cover showing the 1886 date in the colophon and listing the 2. Minami address. Another unusual quality is the binding style; internally sewn, there are no stab holes or external ties. George Baxley's well researched reference work suggests this may be an 1889 reprint issued in a uniform "set" that retained the earlier printing/publication details of the books which were bound spine covered with sewn bindings. Covers lightly toned and a little soiled. Small worm hole in the front edge of the pages, but not through either the front or rear cover. Mild storage creasing to cover and light rubbing stress to cover edges. An early printing with the Japanese transliteration cover design; this 2nd edition does not have the 4th demon in the final woodcut image on the last page. Overall about VG
