19 Winters, Georg Simon Wolerfahrner Pferd-Arzt : Welcher Grundlich Lehret, Wie Man Der Pferde Complexion, Natur Und Alter Erkennen, Alle Inner- Und Ausserliche Kranckheiten Curiren, Und Die Gesunden Pferde Vor Allen Mangeln ...
Nurnberg Johann Andrea Endterischen Buchhandlung 1804 Reprint Leather Bound Good
Woodcut plates; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 838 pages; Period full speckled calf, six raised bands at spine. Morocco title label at spine well worn, shrunken, cracked and indistinct. Leather at spine with vertical stress creasing and a small chip missing mid-spine. Chipped and frayed at spine ends. Rear board hanging on by a thread or two. Illustrated with 44 plates attached to binding stubs; plates are the full width of two pages. 41 numbered plates all present with an additional 3 plates lettered A & B and with one plate, out of sequence, designated with a triangle. Frontis plate of implements is partially present, missing more than half of the plate along the fold. Several prior ownership manuscript entries to the front endpage. A heavy organic brown stain to the larger area of lower front corner of the first few leaves (including the title page) and to the middle (spine adjacent) area of the last 2 or 3 leaves. The text block is generally clean aside from these stains. 3 or 4 plates with short closed margin tears. One plate observed with a small but more pronounced "v" shaped tear at the top edge. Plates appear to be woodcut reproductions of the larger copperplates used in the 17th and 18th century folio sized editions of Winters' exhaustive treatise/s on horse breeding and medicine. This 1805 edition appears to have been a title in demand by and imported to America for the German speaking immigrant population of Pennsylvania. Complete in text and with a full complement of 44 plates. Would benefit from rebacking with the original materials. Still a decent and complete copy. Good
