Vol I [Soldier] has the small ink stamp to the bottom edge of the Simon & Schuster "sower" - indicating a likely remaindered copy; the front jacket flap of this 1st volume is price clipped. Second volume price intact ($24.95) to front flap with no stamp. Superficial stress scrunch to crown of the spine panel of Soldier; otherwise just a whisper of shelf evidence to jackets. First and third books in the trilogy are 1st edition, 1st printing, while the 2nd book "Triumph of a Politician" is a book club edition, though notably in the same size and same quality of binding as the the other 2 titles. First two books signed on the blank front flyleaf while the 3rd book is inscribed on the 2nd front endpage recto. A very handsome and well preserved set with snug, tight bindings and uniformly bright dust jackets. Issue prices intact on books 1 & 3 and flap unclipped on the 2nd book. Just a whisper of shelf evidence to jacket edges. Simon & Schuster "Sower" inkstamp to the bottom edge of the 1st book, perhaps a remainder indication. The books feel and appear unread. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 69 pages; [SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY] Publisher's original textured red cloth, lettered in gilt to cover and spine. Just mild shelf rub to cloth at spine ends and tips. Inconspicuous evidence of a bookplate removed from rear pastedown, of the same size as that at front. Inscribed by Balch to Samuel Dickson, who assisted in the book's preparation. Dickson's engraved, foxhunting themed bookplate mounted to front pastedown. T. W. Balch (1866-1927) practiced law in Philadelphia, devoting much of his time to writing and research in genealogy ans international arbitration. French Monk Emile Coure suggested in his New Cyneas (1623) that international disputes could be mediated by having representatives of all countries meet in one place. His prescient suggestions were not truly adopted until the 20th century. VG copy. Scarce in the original editions. ; Signed by Author

Spine unlettered, as issued but with prior owner's vertical typed paper title label mounted. A solid and attractive copy of the original edition. Corners lightly bumped with trace chipping to cloth at crown of spine panel and a mild bump abrasion to the cloth at the lower corner of the cover board. Light foxing scattered here and there, a bit heavier to first and last few leaves. Prior ownership of prominent Lancaster businessman H. L. Mellinger to the front endpage and his name in blind stamp to the top margin of two preliminary pages. Engraved frontis portrait of Lincoln faces the title page. Complete and sound copy; VG-

B&W Illustration; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 1528 pages; 1856 D. Appleton & Co. 1st edition. Two stout volumes, complete in original ribbed brown cloth with ruling and decorative design in blind to covers and spines; title lettering and pictorial seal still generally bright in gilt to spine. Both volumes snugly bound and generally neat with mild bumping and trace fray at corners. A half inch wide two inch long fountain pen ink stain along the rear hinge of the first volume. Foxing largely confined to the endpages and first and last few leaves. Mild stress to cloth at spine ends with just a little fray at the tail of Vol II. Laid in at front is a broadside prospectus for Benton's abridgement of Congressional debates between 1789 and 1856. Prior owner name written on rear endpaper of volume 2.
