Color lithographs; b/w photos; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; Stout 8vo in original 1/2 leather and marbled paper boards. All edges gilt. Two works bound together, each with unique title page. 9 McLoughlin Bros The Story of the American Firemen [Chromolithograph Color Plate Book]
New York McLoughlin Bros 1908 First Edition Hardcover Fair
Chromolithographs; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 16 pages; Original blue cloth backstrip and chromolithograph illustrated paper over boards. Scarce early firefighter and fire apparatus title designed for the young reader. There are three large, single page chromolithograph plates showing firefighters in action and a double page chromo showing a horse drawn pumper wagon arriving at the scene of an intense conflagration. Scarce title; this example is in general only fair. The front cover board has significant silverfish predation to the surface of the illustrated paper covering. The binding is shaken and the contents are somewhat loose and detaching from their original saddle stapled binding. That being said the chromolithographic plates are bright and generally quite neat. The three large single page images have some light soiling in the margins and mild rubbing at edges. The central two page image has a pair of small abrasions to the image surface near the center fold. A few light stress creases in the plate. The book also features several images in line and a page with two smaller chromolitho images. Probably a breaker copy, with the chromo plates generally nice but the binding and externals rather shabby. Sold as is, with all faults. Some very attractive early chromolithographs of NYC firefighting. Fair only.
