Leather at spine more heavily worn with some chipping and loss of the polished surface layer of the leather - affecting the lower 1/3 of the spine. Spine label legible and complete. Prior owner's ink name stamp several times to front flyleaf. A few pencil doodles to the rear endpage/s. Contents bright and clean with much lighter toning than usually seen. G++

16mo 6" - 7" tall; 440 pages; Bound in publisher's ribbed brown cloth with ornate borders deeply blindstamped to covers. Decorative title lettering to spine in gilt. Cloth over spine weak and partially split in the external joints; mild, shallow chipping to cloth at spine ends. Boards rubbed at corners. Mild damp line to the upper edge of the first and last few leaves. Light toning to the page stock. A crude painted fraktur type prior ownership embellishment to the front endpage appears to be the work of a 7 to 10 year old hand. Done in several colors. Complete, clean and still sound. 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 1st edition of this important and enduring Lancaster Mennonite songbook. Bound in full period polished calf which is chipped at spine ends and rubbed at edges; both clasps are lacking. Text block is intact and the paper is supple, though with expected light uniform toning. Rear board is detatched, front board holding. Paged [6], 79, [1], 415, [1], 17, [1]pp ; 18 cm. Some pages with bars of music. Printed in two columns. Bound, as always, with Ein Neues Unpartheyisches Gesangbuch, with separate title page and pagination. Also imprinted Johann Albrecht, 1804 (Shaw and Shoemaker 6863). With 1825 ink ownership at rear of Maria Landis. This was the first of many editions of this popular Mennonite hymnal printed for the Lancaster Mennonite Church in the 1800's. A reasonably well preserved copy suffering from a detached rear board and loss of clasps. G+ Scarce

Oblong 8vo 8" to 9" tall; 102 pages; 7th edition. Oblong format. The general title page, the title page of the second part, and the music are engraved. 2nd title page is in letterpress. This example lacking covers. The first extant page is the engraved title page and the last is page 102. The index calls for a hymn on page 103 but with no other pages indicated following 103. Bibliographic information calls for 110 pages. Engraved title page for the 2nd (pp [77-78] part is tipped in on page 79. Text block soundly bound. Engraved fronmt title page a little rubbed and nicked at edges with expected light toning and soiling. Contents generally neat with just light finger soiling and mild toning. A few pages with a short closed tear in the front or bottom margin. Presumably lacking at least one page at rear (and perhaps more - though not called for in the index). Lacking endpages and boards. Modern owner has added the 1801 date in ballpont to a blank area of the engraved front title. Uncommon and important American tune book in a later edition. With faults. Fair only, thus

Gilt title lettering tooled to spine, just a little dulled. Stated 2nd edition, but recognized as the 3rd edition of this River Brethren Hymnal, after two editions of 1874. This is the all English language version of the 1876 edition. Scarce River Brethren hymnal has just mild reader wear to preliminary page edges. Expected general toning to page stock. Title page a holding but weak and with partial tears in the gutter margin. Prior ownership and a few brief notes in pencil to rear endpages. Attractive copy of this uncommon Hymnal. VG-

Title page and preface both dated 1868. In the preface manship alludes to his having produced in 1862 a virtually identical collection for distribution to the soldiers in the war. He mentions having a printing of 10,000 copies for the 1868 edition, the 1st thus for sale. A handsomely preserved example; bright and clean with just a whisper of shelf rub to the cloth at the tips. Includes an index of first lines at rear. 99 Hymns in total. Uncommon in the marketplace and in institutional collections. Worldcat records just one example, an edition from 1876 specifying 115,000 copies to that point. NF
