[8], 330, 299, [19], vii, 232 pp. Highly polished ochre calf leather lightly rubbed at front edges and corners; lightly sun faded at spines. Just light shelf rub to paper at board edges. Contents bright and clean. Unadorned bookplates of Robert W, Downing mounted to the front marbled paper pastedown of each volume. Attractive, though lightly worn, finely bound set is complete. A Third Series volume was later published in 1863 but is not present here. In matched attractive leather bindings; spines in six compartments between five raised bands. Red and black morocco title labels in the 2nd and third compartments respectively. 437 and 438 pp. Gilt tooled decorative floursihes in the remaining compartments and over hubs. Some mild depradations, scuffs and mild spotting to the calf leather. Light to moderate foxing of the first and last few leaves of both volumes. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Printed at the University Press by Samuel Collingwood and Co. 1833 & 34. Notable as one of the copies specially bound for distribution as gifts of the estate of Philip the Late Lord Wharton. Bound in full polished calf, paneled and with a large blind stamped panel on the upper board with the text: "The Gift of Philip Late Lord Wharton Distributed by His Lordships Trustees 1834." A printed slip outlining the terms and conditions of the gift is mounted to the front pastedown, reading in part: "Lord Wharton having directed that the Name and Age of the Children, to whom the Bibles are given, shall be wrote in the book; the Trustees require it be so done; and the Child shall be taught to read, and be able to say by Heart the Catechism ..." A child's name, Charles Raukstran, aged 9, is penned to the pastedown above the printed slip. Soundly bound and decent with moderate bumping to front corners. Leather straps and brass clasps lacking. Light shelf rubbing to leather at board edges; some several signatures starting a little at the front edge. Rear free endpage has a "u" shaped, large chip torn fromt he page. Notable gift binding. Contents complete with occasional spotting, corner creasing and light wear. G++ to VG-

Spines in six compartments with raised bands and decorative gilt and brown rules and devices. Complete with the folding maps and lithographs, though the rebinding has sewn the text block too tightly to accomodate the opening of one of the folded maps and one of the plates. Expected usual light toning to page stock. Superficial worming in the margins of the last 40 pages of the 2nd volume. Not including the 3rd plate volume. A striking and handsomely rebound set of the primary text volumes with contents in clean and neat condition. VG++ ... Double gilt fillet ruling at spine ends; single gilt rule to the cloth morocco seam. Top edges gilt. All volumes snughly bound and neat. Some light surface (box storage? ) rub to the spines, generally mild, but a bit heavier to vols V and VII. Gilt tooled title lettering bright to all spine save for some rub and dull to Vol V. Marbled endpages. Several of the volumes are lightly bumped at front corners with slight rub through to cloth at tips. Armorial bookplate of Joseph Chamberlain - "Je Tiens Ferme" - mounted to the front pastedown of each volume. Illustrated with frontis engraving anf folding facsimile of Scott manuscript. Endpages and plates moderately foxed but text generally clean and bright. Notable prior ownership; attractive if slightly worn fine bindings. VG ... This is the 3rd volume of 3 in the work "My Novel." Finely bound in full crushed green levant morocco by Trautz-Bauzomet. Quadruple filet gilt ruled borders in geometric pattern with elaborate floral gilt tooling to sides and spine, with white full morocco doublures tooled with gilt and colored floral designs. Text printed on japanese vellum; tissue guarded photogravure plates in two states, hand colored with watercolor and in uncolored form. All edges gilt; Morris pattern marbled endpapers in two styles. A magnificent example of fine binding work by Trautz-Bauzomet. This volume from the larger set limited to 26 lettered copies is lettered "B" on the limitation colophon. Pages unopened. Trace toning to spine; a few light instances of rubbing to extremities - some scuffing to leather at crown and bottom front corner of the upper board. VG+ ... Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 259 pages; 1st edition. Special leather bound edition still in original publisher issued, lidded box. Soundly bound in original brown, limp suede leather with gilt emossed lozenge title panel to cover. These limp leather gift type bindings which were a feature of turn of the century publishing are notoriously fragile. This copy particularly well preserved - a benefit of still being protected by the publisher issued box. Patterned white paper covered, lidded box is a bit worn at corners and edges with light/moderate soiling to surfaces. Glassine box liner still present - a little toned with some tears and chips. Publisher's title label to one edge of the lid. Some pages in the text unopened at the front edge. Illustrated with about 10 b&w plates of musicians. Handsome example of the book is about NF in G++ box.
