Good. No dust jacket as issued. ; 308 p. Includes several page catalog of publisher's titles at rear; 308 pages; HC Original terra cotta cloth boards with blind ruled borders to boards and gilt detailing to spine. No edition or printing history given, but apparently the 4th edition printed. Sound solid and complete. Several prior ownership indications to front endpages and a call slip from a private spiritist library to rear endpage. Cloth at spine just mildly dulled. First word of title on spine underscored in ink. Trace silverfishing evidence to boards at fore edge and base of spine. In general quite bright and neat. Presented as an investigation of Spiritism but reads as an apologia. Scarce work, held by only a dozen or so library special collections. Outlined in contents with chapters having testimonials against, for (much more substantial) with mediumship, presentiment, reincarnation, cures for cancer and observations on social relevance; i. E. , in regard to suffrage, marriage, free love, communism etc. Solid copy; VG- Scarce

8vo 8" - 9" tall; 280 pages; 1st or early edition; the Charles Powner published edition is not recorded in any Worldcat holdings. There is no mention of a volume number in any part of the title nor in the title lettering to the cloth boards. Original pebbled brown cloth with gilt title lettering to cover and spine faded and somewhat indistinct. Cloth lightly crimped at spine ends with a hint of fray at the crown. Page stock is of a lower grade paper and has uniform but light to moderate toning. Mild surface abrsion to the title page has effaced a few letters in the subtitle. Earlier shop label and bookplate of the Dale news Co, purveyor of titles in Occultism and Psychic Science. Sound clean copy a little dulled. Very uncommon in this imprint. VG-

This copy appears to date from 1873/74 almost immediately after Chatto assumed publishing rights with the full 20 plus page Camden Hotten 1873 illustrated catalog reamining as the endmatter. Binder's ticketof Leighton, Son & Hodge to the gutter of the rear pastedown. Soundly bound in original dark green cloth with pictorial designs inside a grid of nine in black to cover and titles in gilt to spine. Cloth lightly frayed and rubbed at spine. Some mild silverfish predation to the sizing of the cloth on the lower board and smaller areas of the upper. Slick brown endpages intact and sound in joints; several signatures starting at front edge. Copiously illustrated with some 300 wood-cuts in text/ Extensive catalog of Camden Hotten published titles at rear. Sound and decent with some fray to cloth at spine ends. G++ to VG-
