114 engraved scenes in text; 12mo 7" - 7˝" tall; 224 pages; 1st edition collected in this translation illustrated by Weir. In original bevelled green cloth with pictorial title designs in gilt. Cloth splitting over the front hinge; endpages sound and board attached. Several incipient breaks to the inner binding with middle signatures starting. Cloth a little rubbed though and bumped at corners with crimping and light fray at spine ends. Noteworthy for the fine illustrations, this copy is loose and broken; a simple rebacking would put it right. Good only thus

Revised and enlarged by Ellis, this is the 3rd edition. Cloth at spine lightly faded with gilt titling just a little dulled. Top front corners of boards show dullness caused by damp. Top corner of the first and last several leaves with a light damp line. Soundly bound and internally clean. Prior ownership effaced top edge of half-title and a subsequent ownership below. VG-

8vo 8" - 9" tall; 863 pages; HC 2 volumes, complete. 427 & 336 pp 1st edition. Resewn and recased in mid 20th century library grade red buckram cloth, with title lettering stamped in gilt. Ex-library copy with expected attachments and indications, including catalog labels to spines, bookplates to front pastedowns and checkout slips at rear. A few blind stamps of library ownership scattered in the texts. Errata slip bound in to Vol I. 28 page catalog of Longman's titles appears at rear of Vol II. A notice at the front of Vol II announces the anticipated completion and publication of a 3rd volume in the work, which was not published. Illustrated with several plates in each volume. Some scattered instances of pencil underlining, largely confined to Vol I, are somewhat sloppy but could be erased. A few scattered pages of the text with a nick or short closed tear to the front edge, of which we have mended a few with archival japanese paper. Uncommon in the original edition, this copy is sturdily rebound but suffers aesthetically from prior institutional ownership. Good only thus. ... Volume II was recased separately from the other 3 volumes and was cut down a little more and cased in a slightly different style. Contents fresh and neat, sturdily bound. Finely bound in late 19th or early 20th century green morocco leather with heavy gilt decoration in spine compartments, decoratively tooled rules and borders to boards and inner dentelles. Titles lettered direct in gilt with all edges gilt; marbled lining papers. With 12 tissue guarded, color lithograph floral plates. Snugly bound and very neat with just mild shelf rub to leather st spine and board tips and a tiny abrasion to the leather along the front edge of the upper board. Prior owner name penned neatly to the verso of the front endpage. Appears to be missing a blank leaf between the ffep and the half-title, presumably excised to remove a gift inscription. Contents bright and fresh with no foxing or toning. Most tissue guards are loosely laid in and some are a little furred at edges where they protruded from the text block. Handsome copy, finely bound. VG++
