Lancaster, PA Johann Albrecht 1804 First Edition Thus Leather Bound Good+ 
16mo 6" - 7" tall; 1st edition of this important and enduring Lancaster Mennonite songbook. Bound in full period polished calf which is chipped at spine ends and rubbed at edges; both clasps are lacking. Text block is intact and the paper is supple, though with expected light uniform toning. Rear board is detatched, front board holding. Paged [6], 79, [1], 415, [1], 17, [1]pp ; 18 cm. Some pages with bars of music. Printed in two columns. Bound, as always, with Ein Neues Unpartheyisches Gesangbuch, with separate title page and pagination. Also imprinted Johann Albrecht, 1804 (Shaw and Shoemaker 6863). With 1825 ink ownership at rear of Maria Landis. This was the first of many editions of this popular Mennonite hymnal printed for the Lancaster Mennonite Church in the 1800's. A reasonably well preserved copy suffering from a detached rear board and loss of clasps. G+ Scarce

12mo 7" - 7" tall; 90 pages; By the American Sunday School Union, 146 Chestbut St. , Philadelphia. 1/4 leather over paper boards. This copy printed prior to the Sunday School Union's move to 148 Chestnut in 1853. Leather spine title lettered "Harriet & Scholars." Paper boards have their marbled paper covering largely missing. Frontis engraving missing, either not bound in or possible removed. Ront endpage neatly removed as well as a corner area of the front pastedown - very likely the product of an owner's wish to remove ownership marks. Binding remains sound but with some weakness and mild internal splits. Complete text, scattered light toning and foxing. Good only, at best.

8vo 8" - 9" tall; 472 pages; Issues 1 -12; all that were published. Bound together in a mid/late 19th century 1/2 leather over marbled paper. Includes numbers 1 - 12 of this short lived monthly devoted to the concerns of the early American frontiersman. Much on brewing, cider making, horse and mule keeping, clearing and planting etc. Extensive and regular content devoted to education. Leather rubbed lightly over spine edges and at corner tips. Binding snug. Expected general toning to page stock. Damp line visible to front and bottom edges but with only a mild tide line visible among the first few leaves. Scattered light toning and foxing in the text, as expected. One leaf with a short closed tear and a small fingernail sized chip which has removed a few words from a passage. A few illustrations from woodcuts. Spine tooled in gilt "Miscellany Vol III" ; small penciled binder's tag tipped in over main title page. Quite uncommon early American magazine, especially so in its complete short run. Includes early abolitionist content. VG-

B&W Illustrations; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 458 pages; HC In original green cloth boards with decoratively gilt stamped spine cloth laid down on a recent rebacking. Original pale yellow endpages intact. Binding snug; contents complete and very neat. Cloth corners lightly bumped; a short, very shallow divot (about 1/2 in length) out of the front edge of the rear board. Rebacked spine has been done professionally but using a rather heavy buckram underneath the original cloth spine panel. Two lengths of cloth tape carefully applied in the gutters of the front and rear endpages. Contents VG+ in a resored binding that preserves most of the original case. Overall G++

No catalog of Harper Select titles at front, though there are ads for regular harper titles inside front and for the magazines to the rear cover. Wrappers shelf soiled and tattty at the edges with small nicks and rubs. Moderate damp stain and tide line to the front edge of the cover and first few leaves. Contents generally neat with just mild toning to page stock and a few pinprick sized paper burns. Uncommon early American issue. G+

Original endpages clean and intact with no splitting. Collated and complete. Would benefit from professional rebacking/recasing; still a clean and solidly bound copy of an exceptionally uncommon and quite significant book in the history of medicine. Small horizontal abrasion to the upper board; presumably a paper title label had been mounted to the center. Board edges lightly rubbed at edges, maroon quarter cloth rubbed and a little thin at spine ends. Small chip missing from the top edge of the half-title. Contents bright and clean; complete save for the sometime seen publisher's catalog. "Fragment" - Byron's early Vampire story included in this volume by Murray without Byron's consent appears in pages 57 to 69. (Randolph p 70-71) VG- thus
