Several Saigon owner or bookseller ink stamps to lower corners of the first several leaves. Leather spine lightly rubbed at edges with shallow chipping from crown. Paper covered boards lightly edge and surface rubbed. Contents generally clean and soundly bound; a few scattered instances of pencil marginalia in the first 50 or so pages. Expected light general toning an superficial spotting to page stock, heavier to first and last few leaves. G++ to VG-

Variously published by Charles Knight and C. Cox with Vol I showing an 1851 date and C. Cox masthead while the other 3 volumes bear 1845/46 Knight publishing details. Likely bound in 1851 by Cox after he assumed responsibility of publication. Snugly bound and clean; shallow chip to the cloth at crown of volume I/II. Uniform light browning to cloth at spines. Large "literary society" bookplates of an east coast college are mounted to the front pastedowns. Mild fray to the cloth along the rear spine edge of Vol III/IV. Illustrated with some 55 - 60 woodcuts in text. Nice uniformly bound set includes the Supplementary Volume [IV]. VG- ... Titlt lettering at spine hand written in white. The boards ar fresh with only light rub at tips. The contents are quite neat, snugly bound and well preserved. A few plates with toning offset from facing text. Original endpages present and intact but somewhat scarred by carefully removed bookplates and card pocket. Presumably the spine backstrip is missing. Still this copy is an excellent candidate for a more attractive rebacking. The contents are nearly Fine. Overall, though Good only in present condition.

Scattered mild margin empasis marks and occasional mild underlining in latter 2 volumes. Titles brightly in gilt to spines of all 3, tooled to leather of II & III and on a faux morocco label of the 1st volume. Vols II & III trimmed for binding and nearly an inch shorter than the first Volume. Flawed example of the uncommon original edition in 3 volumes. ...
