Chromo-lithograph frontis; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 128 pages; Illustrated with a chromolithograph frontis of the Sparrow, male and female examples. Notable provenance; inscribed by the author to Josiah Hoopes, American botanist from West Chester, PA...remembered as the author of the standard work "The Book of the Evergreens." Bound in publisher's pebbled maroon cloth with gilt title lettering to cover and spine. Ruling in blind to boards. Cloth sunned at spine but title lettering readily legible, though faded. Just light rub and superficial fray to cloth at spine ends. Some 3 or 4 pages with a micro tear at the front edge. Later ownership, a small inked namestamp of Louis Hand, appears on the front endpage. Hand was a prominent NJ botanist and author on the subject of native plants. A solid and attractive copy, distinguished by the author's inscription to a prominent late 19th c American botanist. VG ; Signed by Author

Contents clean and neat, but the binding is shaken and the leather spine is faded and tenuous - though generally complete. A few mild internal splits. As with most existing copies of the book the heavy weight of the page stock of this stout volume has weakened the integrity of the binding. Would be greatly improved with a simple rebacking. Contents clean and neat. Save for some mild splits observed in the folds of the large folding chart. Prior ownership name stamp to front endpage. A notable color plate bird book. G++ ... A typed card mounted to the front endpage To Mr J. L. Devine, with the compliments of the author [unigned]." These lines have been crossed out and in the middle of the page is a large drawing of a leaf inside of which well regarded bird expert, Orpheus Moyer Schantz, has inscribed a warm, complimetary note to the esteemed Rocky Mountain naturalist, Arthur Stupka. The drawing and signed inscription are dated 1939. A presumably prior note of ownership by a H. L Yeagley is penned to the top corner same page. The book itself is sound, though worn. Corners are well bumped with cloth abrasions at the corners; light fraying of cloth at spine ends. Cloth stressed and a little soiled to boards; hinges tender, A small dime sized damp stain in the gutter of the first handful of pages. Plates and engravings in good form. A good only copy with noteworthy provenance and a handsome inscription. ... Oversize book may require additional charges for expedited or international shipping. ; Signed by Associated
