Snugly bound in period, pebbled polished red calf with marbled paper covered boards. Vol VI July to Dec 1855 * Vol VII, Jan to june 1856. Just light shelf rub to leather at spine edges and corner tips; superficial surface rubbing to paper covered boards. Contents bright and clean. Arthur's entry in the mid 19th century magazine market, with a format and features similar to Godey's and petersons. Featuring steel plate engraved plates, fashion engravings, needlepoint and textile designs, woodcuts illustrations throughout. Poetry, fiction and houshold observations with suggestions for family rearing, cooking and clothing etc Paged 360 & 383 pp. Handsome neat example. VG to VG+

frontis; 12mo 7" - 7" tall; 331 pages; 1st edition. In original green cloth with decorative borders and ruling in blind to boards and gilt paneling to spine. Soundly bound but a bit worn with a damp/spill stain to the lower spine corner of the cloth, showing with mild discoloration in the spine gutter area of the first 40 or so pages. Gilt at spine fading. Marbled paper pastedowns appear to have been added by a prior owner, with some offset glue toning to the first and last several leaves. Tissue guarded steel plate engraving and extra illustrated title page. 30 page catalog of Lippincott, Grambo titles appended at rear. Good only.

Trace fray to cloth at spine ends. Two small period bookseller labels, one to front pastedown and one at rear. A small red paper label to front pastedown with a leter number code B-8 in pencil. To the lower front corner of a scatteres number of perhaps 10 or so pages is an inkstamp "Coatesville" - presumably from an Historical Society of that town. Prior owner has laid in some several clippings and annotated cards of background on Ellis Lewis of Lancaster PA - a PA Supreme Court Justice and author of one of the eulogies included in this collection. Overall near VG
