Snugly bound in period, pebbled polished red calf with marbled paper covered boards. Vol VI July to Dec 1855 * Vol VII, Jan to june 1856. Just light shelf rub to leather at spine edges and corner tips; superficial surface rubbing to paper covered boards. Contents bright and clean. Arthur's entry in the mid 19th century magazine market, with a format and features similar to Godey's and petersons. Featuring steel plate engraved plates, fashion engravings, needlepoint and textile designs, woodcuts illustrations throughout. Poetry, fiction and houshold observations with suggestions for family rearing, cooking and clothing etc Paged 360 & 383 pp. Handsome neat example. VG to VG+

frontis; 12mo 7" - 7" tall; 331 pages; 1st edition. In original green cloth with decorative borders and ruling in blind to boards and gilt paneling to spine. Soundly bound but a bit worn with a damp/spill stain to the lower spine corner of the cloth, showing with mild discoloration in the spine gutter area of the first 40 or so pages. Gilt at spine fading. Marbled paper pastedowns appear to have been added by a prior owner, with some offset glue toning to the first and last several leaves. Tissue guarded steel plate engraving and extra illustrated title page. 30 page catalog of Lippincott, Grambo titles appended at rear. Good only.

Steel Plate engravings; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 3 volumes, complete. Soundly bound in matching publisher's deluxe trade binding of full red pebbled calfleather with highly decorative borders and vignettes tooled in gilt to boards and decorative title desing sna flourishes gilt tooled to spines. [7], 698; 720; 726 pp. Some light to moderate scuffing and rubbing to leather at board edges; Vol I has a small piece of leather chipped from the crown and Vol III has shallow loss from leather at the tail of the spine. Tissue guarded steel engraved plates throughout, over 80 in total and including extra engraved title pages for each volume. Original coated brown endsheets complete and sound in the joints. All edges gilt. Binder's flaw in Vol III has left a signature including two engraved plates not sewn in on their binding stub; laid in but a little furred where the leaves started from the front edge. Most engraved plates bright and clean, some with mild foxing and a few more heavily foxed. Hand colored, folding map at front of Vol I is clean and generally neat with mild wear to folds. Uncommon in this deluxe trade binding, and thoug a bit rubbed and worn at edges - a generally bright and neat example. VG- thus ... Oversize book will require additional charges for most shipping methods.

To the lower front corner of a scatteres number of perhaps 10 or so pages is an inkstamp "Coatesville" - presumably from an Historical Society of that town. Prior owner has laid in some several clippings and annotated cards of background on Ellis Lewis of Lancaster PA - a PA Supreme Court Justice and author of one of the eulogies included in this collection. Overall near VG
