Map, folding; engravings; 12mo 7" - 7" tall; 179 pages; Snug attractive copy in original ribbed green cloth with architectonic Cathedral design stamped in blind to both boards. Title lettering brightly in gilt to cover; spine unlettered, as issued. Folding plan at front is very neat with only a short closed tear at the margin edge. Illustrated throughout with woodcuts in text, some number of steel plate engravings. Cloth a trifle faded at spine; superficial rub and bumping to corners. Handsome copy; VG++

Cloth color fading at spine; title label surface rubbed and soiled with title lettering partially effaced. Shallow, small chip from cloth at crown; two short rub throughs to cloth along the rear spine edge. Corners light bumped with mild abrasion/fray to cloth. Period gift and ownership signatures to front endpages. Later bookplate of an H. Mather of Trinity, Cambridge is mounted to front pastedown. Text clean and unmarked save for some light foxing to the first few leaves, Mild bubbling to cloth along the lower edges is perhaps the consequence of brief damp exposure though there is no evidence of it to the orioginal endpages or contents. G++

Cloth lightly pul; led and slightly rubbed at spine ends. Light/moderate general flecking to the color of the cloth boards; a bit of silverfish predation to the cloth along the front edge of the upper board. Top edge brillinatly in gilt; front edge slightly foxed. Mounted to front pastedown is the attractive pictorial bookplate of Redmond Conyngham, designed and engraved by noted historian of American printmaking, David McNeely Stauffer. Presumably an 1859 set with some volumes uncorrected on title page dates. All volumes snugly bound. Vol I has several signatures starting. Cloth lightly fased at spines with shallow chipping and fray to cloth spine endsLight damp/spill evidence to cover board of Vol 9 and 10. Armorila bookplate of Robert Leake mounted to the front flyleaf of Vol I. Some pages unopened. Illustrated with over 40 steel engraved plates; a good number of fold-out facsimile manuscript leaves reproduced from Johnson's journals. Solid and still rather attractive. VG-

Some mild depradations, scuffs and mild spotting to the calf leather. Light to moderate foxing of the first and last few leaves of both volumes.
