A somewhat heavy bump to the front edge of the cover board has nicked the cloth 1/3" and left a tiny tear to the margin of the first 15 or so pages. Still solidly readable and reasonably attractive. Small 8vo 7" - 8" tall; 406 pages; HC 1st American edition. Strikingly bound in decorative pictorial cloth binding, with design attributed to Howard Pyle. Square snug and very neat. Illustrated with 26 plates from drawings and engravings by Seymour Lucas, who was just achieving widespread notice around the time of this book's publication. Bound in fine mauve cloth with handsome and striking pictorial design in silver and black to cover and spine. Front board stamped in silver, black and two tones of gray with an image of a cloaked man, standing before a barred archway, and three stylized thistles at the bottom, with a vapor rising from one, crossing the cloaked man, extending toward the head of the board. Spine with thistle, sword, and vapor vignette; title and author in silver. Binding design unsigned but attributed to Howard Pyle. Cf. Minsky. Rear endpage inexplicably missing the front half of the sheet. Otherwise a wonderfully preserved example; bright and fresh. Well executed pictorial plates throughout. VG+ or better
