Corners and spine ends lightly worn; spine cloth gently toned. A slight damp ripple along the top edge of the book's pages and a dim tide line across the surface of the rear board. Mild underscoring and pencil marks on about four pages. Prior owner name and address written neatly in pencil to front endpaper. Illustrated with B/W tables. G+ to VG-

Describes Coit's travels on merchant ships buying and selling cargoes of imported goods, and of supplying arms for the War of Independence in Peru. Includes accounts of a voyage around Cape Horn. Titlt lettering at spine hand written in white. The boards ar fresh with only light rub at tips. The contents are quite neat, snugly bound and well preserved. A few plates with toning offset from facing text. Original endpages present and intact but somewhat scarred by carefully removed bookplates and card pocket. Presumably the spine backstrip is missing. Still this copy is an excellent candidate for a more attractive rebacking. The contents are nearly Fine. Overall, though Good only in present condition.

Cloth a little rubbed and lightly frayed at corner tips and spine ends. A vertical and horizontal crack in the cloth at spine have been mended with archival PVA by prior owner. Volume 2 only of the 1st edition, originally issued in 4 volumes. This 2nd volume is missing the front matter, including title page and frontis, up to pp xiii. First printed leaf is c1/xiii, after which leaf the balance is complete. C2, A4 - Zz4, Aaa4, Bbb2-Eee2. Lacking the frontispice but plates otherwise complete with 12 large copperplate engravings and two small in-text copperplate images. Large plates are mounted to blank leaves, presumably trimmed to engraving edges and mounted during an early 19th century rebinding. Some several pages with tears to margins and two instances of longer closed tears across a printed page. Scattered soiling and a few period corrections to the text in manuscript. Full calf binding with morocco label. Binding rubbed and scarred; front board detached. Includes at rear the index for the Vols 1 & 2, errata sheets for same and a full list of plates for the complete work. With all faults, as is... Bound in a mid 19th century 1/2 rubbed calf leather over burgundy colored paper covered boards. Illustrated with 3 lithographs and 4 engraved plates along with a folding map of "Africa North East of the Cape Colony." Spine in 6 compartments with five raised bands; decorative ruling in gilt to the bands and adjacent compartment edges. Burgundy morocco title label brightly lettered in gilt. Shallow chipping to leather at spine ends and light rubbing to the surface of the leather at corners and spine edges. Upper board detached at joint; contents snugly bound, neat and complete. Lithographs printed on heavier laid paper stand a little proudly at the front edge. Armorial bookplate (H. W. Blake) mounted to the front pastedown; a small smudged and illegible ownership in script to the top corner of the title page. A few stray and very mild ink spots across the title and adjacent verso. One of the lithographed plates shows a mild damp line across the blank top edge; one of the engraved plates has a stray ink smudge in the blank margin. 1st British edition wants mending or rebacking but otherwise neat and attractive.
