Folio 13" - 23" tall; 1298 pages; Folio. The "Elector Bible" featuring full page woodcut engravings of the Prince-Electors of the Holy Roman Empire. [94] 1181, [23] pp. Augsburg Confession at rear. Bound in a mid 19th century 1/2 calf over pebbled brown cloth boards. Spine covering detached and laid in at front. Title page in red and black is bound in on a stub. Frontis of Luther missing along with two of the Elector portraits. Text printed in double columns inside a line border; profusely illustrated with pictorial vignettes from woodcuts, decorative head and tail pieces and decorative initials. Shallow damp stain line across the top corner of the first half of the text. Occasional expected light soiling to pages, but in general a clean and bright text. Candidate for respining or recasing. This copy printed prior to the Sunday School Union's move to 148 Chestnut in 1853. Leather spine title lettered "Harriet & Scholars." Paper boards have their marbled paper covering largely missing. Frontis engraving missing, either not bound in or possible removed. Ront endpage neatly removed as well as a corner area of the front pastedown - very likely the product of an owner's wish to remove ownership marks. Binding remains sound but with some weakness and mild internal splits. Complete text, scattered light toning and foxing. Good only, at best.

Contents snugly bound, many pages unopened at top and front edges. Large fold-out map of the then United States and Territories is crisp and neat with just mild foxing; no tears or mends. Single page map fronts the beginning of the primary text. Internal hinges tender and partially split in the endsheets. Boards slightly bumped at corners. Prior ownership bookplate of a Chateau Oberhofen and a small subsequent penned owner name to front pastedown. Attractive clean copy with weakness in the endpage joints. Uncommon in the 1st edition. Early descriptions of Mormonism and Joseph Smith. VG

By appearances the 7 individual works were at one time shelved independently and later bound together. Bound in cover for #1 is stressed in the gutter with some paper repairs to the first several pages of the text. Text of each generally clean and neat with a few superficial marks oberved. Brass bosses added at all corners and center of boards. Rounded brass bosses pressed into the boards with bumps showing on the pastedowns from the puncture pieces. Tightly bound and very clean with bright clean pages. No toning or foxing, except to the steel engraved plates and facing pages. A good many woodcuts in text and as plates, none discolored or foxed. Light rubbing to leather at extremities, but largely preserved from wear by the period use of the brass bosses. Mid 20 the century Lancaster PA bookseller ink stamp to front endpage.
