102 Victor Hugo Napoleon Le Petit
Londres Jeffs 1852 First Edition Vellum Very Good
32mo 4" - 5" tall; 448 pages; Londres, Jeffs; 1852. 32mo; 10 cm tall. 448 pp. Paged in 8's with 28 signatures. An unusual example; I have not found any other copies noted with this makeup of pagination and signature delineation. Period 3/4 vellum with marbled paper covered boards. Oval inkstamp of a Firenze bookseller placed on the free front endpage and the half-title page. No mention of edition, nor of any other publisher or printer than Jeffs. Title is hand painted in black to otherwise unlettered vellum spine. This presumably was an early copy smuggled back to France. Binding sound and contents clean. Expected mild toning to page stock. Terminal printed leaf has a short tear at the top margin. Mild rub to vellum at edges. An unusual example of the original edition, with no priority known regarding 1st actual printing. VG

Colln Herman Demen 1678 Leather Very Good
3 copperplate engravings; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; Colln, Herman Demen; 1678. 13 cm. Gathered in 12s. Presumably the 2nd edition, with changes made in pagination from the edition of 1675. This 1678 example paged thus, [20], 564, 93. *11, A12 - Z12, Aa6; a12 - d12. Page 564 misnumbered by the printer as 464. A slight yawn between the front endpage and the title page, combined with an apparently missing leaf in the collation of the preliminaries suggests that a frontis or added engraved title page may be missing. Otherwise complete and clean. 3 copperplate engravings are included in the pagination. Bound in stippled brown leather, appearing to be a mid to late 1700's rebinding. Leather over spine rubbed with mild nicking at spine ends and a small open tear near the tail. Spine unlettered. Speckled paint/ink decorated endsheets; all edges gilt, but dimmed. Mild worm traces to the last two leaves and pastedown. Prior ownership to bottom edge of rear endpage. Rare in institutional ownership and in the marketplace; only one 17th Century copy located In institutional hands, an example in silver binding of the 1675 edition at the Smithsonian. Generally VG though could be improved with minimal professional restoration.

Leather at spine with vertical stress creasing and a small chip missing mid-spine. Chipped and frayed at spine ends. Rear board hanging on by a thread or two. The text block is generally clean aside from these stains. 3 or 4 plates with short closed margin tears. One plate observed with a small but more pronounced "v" shaped tear at the top edge. Plates appear to be woodcut reproductions of the larger copperplates used in the 17th and 18th century folio sized editions of Winters' exhaustive treatise/s on horse breeding and medicine. This 1805 edition appears to have been a title in demand by and imported to America for the German speaking immigrant population of Pennsylvania. Complete in text and with a full complement of 44 plates. Would benefit from rebacking with the original materials. Still a decent and complete copy. Good
