Frankfurt Ioannem Theobaldum Schon Wetterum 1611 Vellum Very Good
Copper plate engravings; maps; woodcuts in text; Folio 13" - 23" tall; Two volumes in one. Folio oversize in contemporary vellum binding with decorative corner and center devices impressed to boards. Double fillet ruling to borders and decorative tooling over the spine compartments. 19 copper plate engravings present of the 24 called for. Some minor worming in the gutters of the pastedown and first several leaves. Mild damp line to the front edge of the terminal ensheets. 3 plates with mild damp stain in the top margin and shallow chips from the same edge. Map plate has the lower front corner of the front margin torn away. Vellum with expected but mild darkening and soil. Vellum boards slightly concave; binding secure and well preserved. Fratri suo dilectissimo. // Andreas Osiandro D // dddt" . Later pencil ownership inscription "William Henry Hechler, British Embassy // Vienna" where Hechler served as Chaplain from 1885 to 1910. He did much to encourage the legitimacy of Herzl's Zionist endeavors among the ruling class of Germany. Some light maroon fountain pen to short phrases and passages scattered in the First of the six books. Some pencil annotations and underlining in the tables at the conclusion of the first book, all presumably from Hechler's intense study. Paged VI: [12], (plates) , 484 p; VII: [4], 420, [40] p. Text printed within double rules; main body in two columns. Engraved title page at front and separate title for Vol II. Each of the six books has a partial title and woodcut headpiece. Each of the six books is followed by tables. 107 Victor Hugo Napoleon Le Petit

32mo 4" - 5" tall; 448 pages; Londres, Jeffs; 1852. 32mo; 10 cm tall. 448 pp. Paged in 8's with 28 signatures. 3 copperplate engravings; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; Colln, Herman Demen; 1678. 13 cm. Gathered in 12s. Presumably the 2nd edition, with changes made in pagination from the edition of 1675. This 1678 example paged thus, [20], 564, 93. *11, A12 - Z12, Aa6; a12 - d12. Page 564 misnumbered by the printer as 464. A slight yawn between the front endpage and the title page, combined with an apparently missing leaf in the collation of the preliminaries suggests that a frontis or added engraved title page may be missing. Otherwise complete and clean. 3 copperplate engravings are included in the pagination. Bound in stippled brown leather, appearing to be a mid to late 1700's rebinding. Leather over spine rubbed with mild nicking at spine ends and a small open tear near the tail. Spine unlettered. Speckled paint/ink decorated endsheets; all edges gilt, but dimmed. Mild worm traces to the last two leaves and pastedown. Prior ownership to bottom edge of rear endpage. Rare in institutional ownership and in the marketplace; only one 17th Century copy located In institutional hands, an example in silver binding of the 1675 edition at the Smithsonian. Generally VG though could be improved with minimal professional restoration.
