125 Spratt, G. [George] Obstetric Tables : Comprising Graphic Illustrations, with Descriptions and Practical Remarks : Exhibiting on Dissected Plates Many Important Subjects in Midwifery
Philadelphia Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co 1848 First American Edition Leather Very Good
Lithographs, with overlays; colored; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 1848 Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. , Philadelphia. "First American edition from the fourth and greatly improved London edition". There were at least two ealier American printings in 1847 by Wagner & McGuigan and by Thomas, Cowperthwait. Bound in a later 19th century full calf with red morocco title label brightly lettered in gilt to spine. Soundly bound with contents complete, including the subscriber's lists at front and the single page ad at rear. Including the tissue garded frontis there are 21 full page lithograhped plates, most with mechanical overlays and hand colored with tissue guards. At leat one plate has a tissue guard integral between the colored overlay leaves. Table I. B. - one of the non overlay lithographs with 4 figures of the pelvis - had apparently come loose from the book and has some light furring at the edges; it isreinserted on a heavier paper stub in what appears to be a repair from some decades ago. The front edge was also backed with a heavier paper strip to reinforce a short closed tear in the front margin. All the overlays are present and in very good handling order with only light evidence of use and prior viewing at the folds. The only tissue guard missing is for the reinserted plate I. B. Tissue guard for the frontis lithograph is well foxed with some offset foxing to the title page. . Surface of lithographs are generally bright and clean, though the blank reverse side of many plates are foxed with some offset foxing and toning to the facing page of text. Bookplates of two prior owners mounted to front pastedown - Mrs. Elliot Colburn Low and Leonard J. Schiff. Binding sound but some early tenderness in the front hinge to the top few inches of the external joint. Leather with mild surface furring at front edges and a shallow surface abrasion rear board adjacent to the tail. Altogether a rather well preserved example of this extraordinary color plate book on obstetrics and midwifery. VG ... Augsburg Johann Jacob Lotter 1738 First Edition 1/2 leather Fair
5 folding copperplate engravings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 216 pages; Augspurg : Druckts und verlegts Johann Jacob Lotter, 1738. 1st edition, with none earlier specified or held by specialist collections. Soundly bound in a late 18th or early 19th c. 1/2 calf over sponge patterned paper covered boards. Title page is a double leaf, slightly trimmed at edges up to the text of the longer sub-titling. [18], 216 pp with 5 folding copperplate engravings. LACKING 2 leaves - M4 & M5 - pages 183-186. Paper boards shelf rubbed at edges with boards showing along the edges; some scuffing and mild loss to paper over lower board. Spine lightly rubbed with 4 or 5 very small instances of worming to the leather. Text block slightly trimmed most evidently to the frontmatter leaf "Erklarung des Kupffer-Blatts," explanation of the plates, which is trimmed into the heading text along the top edge. Doublepage copperplate (Tab A) at pg 197 shows a birthing chair and 9 obsterics devices for use in child birth. 4 folding copperplates bound in at rear (Tab 1 - 4) show 16 examples of procedures for delivery - including many for breech and encumbered deliveries. Tab 4 is loose from the binding and a bit furred at edges - laid in at rear adjacent to Tab 3. Several of the copperplates have period notations in the blank areas adajcent to the illustrations - which appear to be a sequence of names, all of which have been crossed through in the same period ink. Perhas a record of delivieries. Prior ownership of a David Baer in pencil to the front flyleaf is dated 1836 (probably Lancaster PA). Notably lacking pages 183-186 , but otherwise sound and clean with 5 plates. No frontispiece engraving. Fair to good only given the loss of 2 leaves. Scarce early midwifery volume, notable for the plates of devices and methods.
