122 Montaigne, Michel De; Peter Coste The Essays of Michael Seigneur De Montaigne, Translated Into English. The Eighth Edition, with Very Considerable Amendments and Improvements, Volumes I, II and IV of 4
Dublin James Potts 1760 Eighth Edition Leather Very Good
12mo 7" - 7" tall; Volumes 1, 3 and 4 of the four volume edition. A revision of Charles Cotton's translation. Though sadly lacking the third volume, this set is in remarkably well preserved condition. Contemporary polished calf bindings remain very soundly bound with pliant and supple joints and complete contents. Partial morocco labels to Vols I and II, lacking a label on IV. A few very small areas of loss to leather at edges and ends. Two or three small, pin head sized scars or worming damage to the boards. Contents exceptionally bright and clean; no foxing nor toning of any significance. Manuscript bookplate on cut paper to the front pastedown of the first volume - W. Pundlau[? ]. A strangely uncommon edition; I have been able only to identify a physical copy held by the British Library among insititutional holdings, from which have been issued a great number of facsimile and e-book reproductions. Though lacking the third volume, this set is in quite VG or better condition.
