Prior owner, Watts De Peyster, has added colored pencil underlining somewhat heavily in the contents page and in the index but only very lightly and quite infrequently in the text itself. Ex-library with expected institutional attachments to endpages and catalog label at spine. De Peyster added this volume to the collection of the Library at franklin & nmarshall that was established in his name. Soundly bound and with generally clean text. One signature starting slightly mid-book. G+ thus

Albany Barber & Southwick 1796 First Edition Thus Leather Good+ 
12mo 7" - 7" tall; 192 pages; 1st edition by this printer and of the same year as the first Cambridge, US edition. In original calf boards with partial morocco title label at spine. Binding sound with boards well attached, though slightly convex to their flat surfaces. Leather rubbed at edges; corners a little rounded. Mild shallow chip from the leather at the tail of the spine. Tile label chipped and missing better than half. Two small goues to the leather at spine; light general sciffing and scarring to the board surfaces, with a small area of spill stain along the top edge of the rear board. Front endpage and half-title missing; book opens to the title page. 1796 gift inscription in manuscript to the front pastedown "presented to Sophia Farnian[? ] by her friend Jos. Menschner [? ]. 15 Oct. 1796" A pair of subsequent ownership notes below the original inscription. Text is generally quite clean and bright with only mild toning to a few early pages. Some damp lines to the top edges of the first and last couple of leaves. A rather decent still example of this 1st Albany edition. G++ to VG-
