Soundly bound in original trade binding of red cloth with decoratively gilt panelled spine. Mild crimping and light rubbing to cloth at spine ends. Brick red cloth is universally bright across all surfaces. Binding a little shaken. Prior owner name and 1907 purchase date penned neatly to blank front endpage. Considerably nicer than usually seen example from the first years of the Everyman series. 2nd printing of the Everyman edition. [Seymour p 80] VG

Leipzig Bernhard Tauchnitz 1879 1/4 leather Very Good- 
12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 289 & 276 pages; Very uncommon Tauchnitz published edition, issued concurrently with the Chatto London edition. 2 vols in 1. Bound in 1/4 red leather with marbled paper covered boards. Spine slightly cocked; spine edges and surfaces of raised bands are lightly rubbed. Marbled paper boards lightly rubbed corners. Binding firm and enpages neat. Silk bookmark sewn in. Chatto & Windus published the work in 3 vols, 1879; Tauchnitz in 2 vol edition simultaneously. Tauchnitz, who was a personal friend of Collins, was an important publisher of English literary works "on the continent. " At a time when piracy was common Tauchnitz undertook to purchase from the author the publishing rights for his work outside of England and America. Thus the great majority of his publications bear the imprint on either title page or verso of being a "Copyright edition". His publication of important literary works were often concurrent with and sometime prior to London publication dates. This example of this difficult to find Collins title is VG-

8vo 8" - 9" tall; 303 pages; Scarce. Ex lending library copy. Dust jacklet complete and generally bright though the flaps are firmly glued to the pastedowns. Soundly bound and generally decent. Two different rental library stamps to front flyleaf and the remanant of another label to the front pastedown. The whole dust jacket had been laid down on an underlayment of brown paper and then glued to the pastedowns. Boards have pictorial design matching the pictorial elements of the jacket. Shelf rub to the upper and lower board edges. Jacket rubbed at edges and a little to surfaces. Fresh mylar cover laid over the jacket. Uncommon early work by Croft-Cooke is dedicated to "Bosie" Alfred Douglas. G+/G+
