Wood cut frontis; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 305 pages; Small format 16mo in period vellum. Frontis, [14], [8], 305 pp. *7, []4, A-M12, N7. Cream vellum covered boards lightly soiled. A vertical stress to the spine has begun to crack. Small closed split in the vellum along the lower edge of the cover board. Contents clean and neat. Bound with frontis, title and prelims, followed by an unsigned 8 page catlog of works published by Coignard between 1660-1692. Mild yawn in the interior front hinge. Prior ownership of Prince Franz Joseph [?] of Liechtenstein with the Princes of Liechtenstein bookplate mounted to the front pastedown. Solid and complete example of this scarce 17th century philosophical tract, first published in 1667 and attributed to Claude Ameline. VG

Cloth a little rubbed at edges and corners; boards peeking through lower front corners. 12 page catalog of Dodd Mead juvenile titles appended at rear. G+ only. Includes the Declaration, Constitution of the US with amendments and the constitutions of the first 24 states ending with Missouri. Lacking the front board but otherwise very neat with a VG text block.

To the front pastedown is a presentation bookplate identifying the book's original owner and the date of the gift to an eastern American college's literary society. Small period paper label at the crown of the spine; no other marks or attachments. Pastedowns and endpages moderately foxed. Solid neat copy in considerably better condition than usually found. VG

The second edition. 312 & 283 pp. Bound in matching, period full polished calf with red morocco labels to spines. All original endpage blanks and half-title pages present. Extra engraved title page at front of both volumes. Superficial scarring to leather at spines with shallow chipping and loss to leather at crown of both spines. Soundly bound with all boards attached but with leather splitting over the front joint of Vol I, held well by cords and weakness in leather over the front joint of vol II. A short instance of worming through the surface of the leather in contiguous areas of the upper board of Vol I and lower board of Vol II. Essentially sound and entirely complete. A good looking set, quite uncommon in the 18th century editions. Index at rear of Vol II, with publisher one page ad the terminal printed page. VG- thus

Quarto volumes uniformly bound in contemporary speckled calf with spines in six compartments; red and black leather title labels to spines. Xxxvi, 476; 337, [1], (20) pp. Joints repaired, with archival linen tape reinfocring internal hinges and traces of PVA in the external joints. Leather had split over joints but repairs are sound and holding. Some light chipping to leather at spine ends and edges; drying and mild darkening to leather at board edges. Both volumes include an original blank at front and rear; there are no half-title pages. Engraved bookplates (Allardice, Philadelphia) of the "Library Company of Baltimore" are mounted to the front pastdowns of both volumes. Contents bright, clean and complete with only mild foxing scattered through. Title page continues: "From the originals in the possession of Richard Powney, with an appendix from Archbishop Sancroft's manuscripts in the Bodleian Library." Printer attribution not printed on title page of Vol II. Of James II, last Catholic monarch of England and his actions in Ireland and of the end of James reign in the "Glorious Revolution". Errata as one final leaf of two pages at rear of Vol III. Snugly bound in early 19th century polished calf with recent professional rebacking using sympathetic calf leather. New morocco labels to spine tastefully tooled in gilt. Prior ownership letterpress stamp of George Campbell, Liverpool appears top margin of recto B1 and horizontally in front margin, verso H2. Cut paper armorial bookplates "Boutez En Avant" of the Barry family Ireland are mounted to the pastedowns of each volume. Leather boards bumped and scuffed a bit at edges. Engraved frontis sewn in a bit too tight with caption text obscured slightly toward the gutter. Includes half-titles for Vol II and III, final leaf of musical notation in Vol II. Boards rubbed at edges and surfaces. Several signatures sprung. Prior ownership manuscript to front endpage dated 1807. Some foxing and toning to pages. One of the more difficult to locate early Lancaster imprints, from the short lived Lancaster print shop of Moravian immigrant, Christian Jacob Hütter - who went on to establish a sucessful printing business in Easton PA. PGS 1273. Good only

8vo 8" - 9" tall; 208 pages; New York, George Adlard; 1838. Volume II, only. Paged [3] - 208 with [4] pages of Adlard publisher ads at rear. Bound in original patterned green cloth with lettered paper title label to spine. 1st edition of this very uncommon volume of short pieces by the highly regarded early 19th century Southern writer, historian and novelist, William G. Simms. This 2nd volume contains three of Simms' Cherokee related tales and though sadly lacking the 1st volume of stories, stands independently and thus complete in itself. A well preserved example in the full textured green cloth; original title label with quite minute lettering is missing only a micro portion of one corner and though toned is quite legible with complete lettering. Binding solid and contents complete and neat. Slightly cocked in the spine. The stories included in this 2nd volume are: "Conrad Weickhoff" -- "Logochie" -- "Jocassee" -- and "The Cherokee Embassage." A VG copy; quite scarce.
