144 Chambers, Robert W. The King in Yellow
New York F. Tennyson Neely 1897 First Edition; early printing Hardcover Good+
12mo 7" - 7" tall; 316 pages; Presumed 1897 edition. F. Tennyson Neely, New York. Soundly bound in publisher's black cloth with pictorial desing to cover of a red-winged, yellow robed "king" figure, with titles in silver. There are some questions regarding the publication date of this binding design - the most iconic of the original bindings - with some references to an 1897 and others to an 1899-1900 date. Aside from the question of priority, it is the most fitting binding design used by Neely in the early issued of Chambers' classic supernatural story cycle. Top edge gilt; other edges untrimmed. Silver, red and yellow desing to spine a bit dulled and rubbed but still quite distinct. Corners pushed and lightly bumped. Evidence of a light damp incident to the bottom edge of the lower board, with associated shallow damp line in the margins of the last several leaves of the publisher catalog pages at rear and the lining sheets at front. Cloth lightly crimped at spine ends; trace soling to upper board. Tissue guarded frontis intact and clean but tissue guard lightly foxed and pulling away from the frontis at the bottom edge. Title page appears to be a cancel and is also pulling at the lower edge. Occasional mild spotting and expected light general toning to page stock. Mild shallow dmap line to the front edge of a section of pages mid-book. Sound, unmarked and still attractive of this early printing in the most distinctive of the original publisher's binding designs. G+
