193 De Benneville, James S. George Brandt
Boston The Christopher Publishing House 1941 First Edition Hardcover Near Fine in Good+ dust jacket
8vo 8" - 9" tall; 178 pages; HC/DJ 1st and only edition. Rare. Bound in publisher's bright orange cloth with decorative title lettering brightly in gilt to cover and spine. In the original brown paper dust jacket lettered in black and ruled in red. A tight, clean copy with just superficial crimping to cloth at spine ends. A shallow swath of the dust jacket is missing along the top edge of the front panel. A light damp discoloration to the lower third of the jacket's spine panel does not show any effect on the book's cloth or contents. Quite rare, this posthumously published novel is by the well regarded translator of a number of older Japanese tales and historical legends. OCLC locates not a single copy held institutionally. The novel has a striking and unusual narrative style, is hip in diction and manner though perhaps somewhat didactic at the same time. NF/G++
