181 Gorey, Edward The Willowdale Handcar or The Return of the Black Doll
New York Dodd, Mead & Co. : Congdon & Weed 1979 0396077676 / 9780396077671 First Edition Thus Hardcover Near Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket Signed by Author
B&W Illustrations; Square 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 64 pages; [SIGNED] 1979 Dodd, Mead & Co. : Congdon & Weed, New York. 1st printing of this 1979 hardcover reissue of the 1962 paperback original work. 1st Hardcover edition. Signed by Gorey on the title page under his crossed-out author name. This copy is very tightly bound and feels unread, bound in pictorial paper covered boards and matching pictorial dust jacket. An unusual example with a Congfon & Weed label affixed to the top corner of the front flap with a separate ISBN (0312929463) from that used by Dodd. The tip of the front flap including the label is corner clipped. Presumably the short lived publishing house of Congdon & Weed assumed ownership of unsold stock from Dodd. Just a whisper of shelf evidence to jacket edges. Handsome and fresh copy. NF/VG+++; Signed by Author

182 Grafly, Dorothy and E. H. Suydam, Illustrator A History of the Philadelphia Print Club
Philadelphia Philadelphia Print Club 1929 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good+ Signed by Author & Illustrator
Plates from drawings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 17 pages; [SIGNED] Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Print Club; 1929. HC 1st edition. Signed by both author and illustrator and with noteworthy provenance. Inscribed warmly to "T. O." on the front endpage by the author, Dorothy Grafly. On the half-title page Suydam has inscribed the book to another individual, Marie M. Meloney, with the added inscription, "one of six specially bound copies." Meloney was a leading woman professional of the Jazz age and a prominent early woman journalist. Grafly was a prominent Philadelphia art critic who went on to become the longtime publisher and editor of Art in Focus magazine. The exact meaning of Suydam's describing this copy as one of "six specially bound" is unclear. It seems possible and perhaps likely that the inscriptions took place at different time to different individuals. A pleasing confluence of prior ownership and authorial inscriptions. The book is snug and neat in original tan paper covered boards and heavy cloth backstrip. Printed paper title label to cover board. A small swath of mild sun toning to the top edge of spine and cover board. Trace bump/rub to corners. ; Signed by Author & Illustrator

New York D. Appleton & Company 1926 Fourth Printing Hardcover Very Good+ Illustrated by Vernon Hill
8vo 8" - 9" tall; 279 pages; [SIGNED, with drawing, verse and inscription - by Vachel Lindsay] 4th printing of the original edition. An account of the poet, Vachel Lindsay's extended hiking trip with the author. This copy is notable for the extensive inscription added by Lindsay. It covers two facing pages, the blank verso of the front fly and the half-title page. A large drawing of a thorned rose fills the page, with a 4 line poem penned at the foot of the page and a title for the composition of verse and picture penned top edge. Facing the drawing and poem is an extensive August 1927 dated inscription to Fred Black (at that time the executive in charge of advertising for Ford Motor Co). Mounted to the front endpage is the personal bookplate of Fred and Maude Black. Trace residue of a removed bookplate on the recto of the front flyleaf and a small, faint 6 digit numer stamp along the lower edge of the preface page. The book is snug and neat with just trace shelf rubbing to the boards at tips. Gilt lettering at spine just a bit dulled. VG+; Signed by Biographee
