Vol I [Soldier] has the small ink stamp to the bottom edge of the Simon & Schuster "sower" - indicating a likely remaindered copy; the front jacket flap of this 1st volume is price clipped. Second volume price intact ($24.95) to front flap with no stamp. Superficial stress scrunch to crown of the spine panel of Soldier; otherwise just a whisper of shelf evidence to jackets. Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; [SIGNED] 1987 - 1991. Simon & Schuster. All three volumes signed and inscribed by Ambrose to the same individual. First and third books in the trilogy are 1st edition, 1st printing, while the 2nd book "Triumph of a Politician" is a book club edition, though notably in the same size and same quality of binding as the the other 2 titles. First two books signed on the blank front flyleaf while the 3rd book is inscribed on the 2nd front endpage recto. A very handsome and well preserved set with snug, tight bindings and uniformly bright dust jackets. Issue prices intact on books 1 & 3 and flap unclipped on the 2nd book. Just a whisper of shelf evidence to jacket edges. Simon & Schuster "Sower" inkstamp to the bottom edge of the 1st book, perhaps a remainder indication. The books feel and appear unread. frontis engraving; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 165 pages; hardcover in original brown cloth with elaborate decorative blind stamped designs to boards; title letteringand pictorial elements brightly in gilt to spine. Issued as one of the volumes in the Francis & Co. "Little Library". Apparently the 2nd American edition after an 1847 James Miller printing. Illustrated with tissue guarded frontis engraving of "The Little Match Girl". Snugly bound and clean. Cloth lightly crimped at spine ends with trace fray. Boards lightly bumped at corners. Period gift inscription in pencil to front endpage. All endpages present and well bound. Expected light toning and occasional spotting to page stock. One page near front has a small piece of the page at the top corner torn away; the rear free endpage is missing a more sizable piece from the top corner. Still a very solid and still quite handsome copy of this scarce early printing of some essential Andersen tal;es, including the match Girl and Red Shoes among others. Page 154 to 165 comprise an afterword by Charles Boner with several pages of publisher ads appearing at rear. VG-

Original cream/white paper dust jacket lettered in black and red. Mild shelf soiling to the whites of the jacket; somve very light nicking and rub to DJ edges witha short closed tear or two. Publisher's $2.00 issue price printed mid spine. Original owner has carefully reinforced the spine ends with an application of transparent tape on the reverse side of the jacket. Many pages unopened at the bottom edge; an unread copy. This copy was part of a bequest to a University Library but not added to collections; a small one word stamp has been unobtrusively placed in the gutter, lower edge of the dedication page. No other prior ownership indications or marks of any kind. NF-/VG+

Top edge stain is green, slightly faded. Just mild silverfish predation to the sizing of the cloth along the lower and front edge of the cover board. Cloth just a little crimped at spine ends; verysmall pin sized puncture to cloth mid-spine. At rear is a 4 page catalog of Sturdy, Swift, X Bar X and Hardy titles. Sturdy list has only 12 titles. Snugly bound in 1/4 heavy cram colored linen spine over green cloth boards, with title lettering brightly in gilt to cover and spine. Top edge gilt and other edges untrimmed. Lavishly illustrated with 39 photogravure plates after Rubens, Teniers, Wootton, Stubbs, Oudry, Alken, Shayer, G. & M. Earl, and others; printed on vellum with tissue guards. This copy lacks the limitation page and the front lining sheets have been refreshed. A spot of nicking to the cloth at crown and a pair of tiny nicks to the cloth at tail. Boards lightly to moderately bumped with superficial fray at front corners. Mild foxing to rear lining sheets and to most of the tissue guards. Generally quite bright and clean, and though lacking the limitation leaf, otherwise complete and attractive. VG- to VG thus ...
