No stains or discoloration visible to the jacket externals or pages. Jacket is crisp edged with just light surface rub over the spine edges and surfaces. Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 3050 pages; 4 volumes complete. Mid 20th century, high quality reissue of the original Century magazine series which appeared serially at the turn of the century. A very solid and neat set in original pictorial dust jackets. Volumes in original cloth bindings - each volume in a different hue of cloth and dust jacket primary color. All bindings sound and solid; dust jackets bright and clean with light shelf rub shelf to edges and surfaces. A few tiny nicks and short closed tears to jacket edges; Vol IV with larger but still just shallow and small chips missing from spine ends. Prior owner had used archival mylar jacket covers which he anchored to the books' cloth boards. We have added fresh removable mylar jacket covers though some tape remnants remain to the external cloth. Profusely illustrated with facsimile engravings. Ex-library copy with rmanants of repair tape that was applied to strengthn the rear joint, of which the cloth is completely separated and the board tenuously attached by cords. Prior ownership of John Watts de Peyster, noted military historian, social and policy pioneer. This volume was among several thousand on military history to the library he established at Franklin and Marshall College. An exhaustive list of his honors and services is mounted to the verso of the title page and his bookplate to the blank foot of the final page of the preface. Red and blue wac pencil underlining sporadically in the text presumably of his hand. Cloth fraying at spine ends; with library attachments and indications. Text complete and generally clean Fair only

Split to the rear endpage joing; front free endpage appears to have been removed - liekely to excise ownership or gift inscription/ Text complete and generally clean with only modest foxing and light soiling to endpages and light foxing to occasional pages of text. Mild damp stain to lower front corner of the middle 100 pages not affecting text; mild sliverfish pitting to the page block edges at front and top. Text complete and clean in original binding - but with faults. Good only/
