Copperplate; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 1675, printed [by J. R. ] for W[illiam]. B[irch]. And are to be sold by Tho. Sawbridge at the Three Flower-de-luces in Little-Britain, and by William Birch at the Peacock at the lower-end of Cheapside, London. 3rd edition, corrected and somewhat enlarged as noted on main title page, with separate title pages for 3 discretely paged parts of the work identified as the second edition. Title page printed in red and black. Lacking the engraved frontis and the terminal printed leaf of the book, paged 303 - Rr1 . [24], 27, [1], 179, 200-504, [4]; [8], 116, [4], 104, [4]; [4], 302 pp. Printer or binder errors to front matter with signatures not sequential but catchwords appearing correct. There are three separate notices "To the Christian Reader" with unusual collation signatures. Title page followed by (c) 1, "To the Christian Reader", followed by Epistle Dedication to Philip Wharton (b) 1-2, followed by two separate notes "To the Christian Reader" [(c) 2]? , (d) 1-2. The whole work professionally rebound in a port wine colored goat skin; upper board paneled to match the original binding (the leather for which is laid in at rear). Title page has an old paper repair to the top corner with the tips of the red letter print of the final W in Marrow inked in red. Title page and several subsequent pages gathered using paper stubs bound in. A short shallow gouge to the front edge of pages 53 - 150, possibly the result of an ember burn; gouge is deepest in pages 80 -130 with some loss of the printed margin annotation but never intruding into the primary text. Includes numerous copperplate engraved portraits in text and a large copper engraved plate paneled in twelve with portraits of eminents. Original paste-down with ownership laid down on refreshed front paste-down. Front matter of first 10 or so leaves has some light nicking and chipping to edges. Final printed page Qq2 has paper repairs to edges. Lacking frontis portrait and the last printed page of the book. Otherwise complete and decent. In an attractive professional rebinding. Good thus

Paper skinned at front board with about 1/3 of paper covering lost. Boards scuffed at edges; corners bumped and bruised. Unlettered leather spine is solid. Replacement endpages at front and rear, rather too generously glued to adjoining leaf - at front, the title page. Front endpage split showing replacement crash under leather and resewn binding. Some several signatures starting and rubbed at protruding edges. Damp line to the corners and front edge of the first 30 or so and last 20 pages. Expected moderate toning and foxing scattered in text. Contains one only of the four plates called for. Otherwise complete in the text, including the terminal leaf with plate descriptions. *4 [2 daggers] [2] A-2B4. Crude reapirs could be reversed without much trouble. Fair to good only.

Period full vellum; spine in six compartments with five raised bands. Title lettering inked in manuscript to second compartment with inked devices drawn in the 1st and 3rd compartments. Woodcut title page vignette, tailpieces and first letters to each commentary and index. Spine and top edge a little smoked. Boards slightly concave and yawning somewaht at front edge. Very short 1 inch closed crack to vellum at spine joints from the tail. Contents complete and clean with supple pages free of toning or foxing. Short ownership inscriptions to base of title page and recto of rear endpage. Boards have no pastedowns; binding cords exposed as sewn through the boards. Ownership bookplate of SSM Kelham. Library cloth is slightly irregular and bubbled lower inch or two from a damp episode, also visible as a tide line and ripple to the newer endsheets but with no discernible effect to the pages of the text. 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 98 pages; Hardcover in original cloth backed title lettered, paper covered boards. 4th edition. Sound, solid copy with the publisher's trade binding. Brown cloth spine with 4 horizontal rules in gilt; unlettered, as issued. Light general toning and light soiling to decorative title lettered boards. Short, mild scrapes to board edges; corners lightly bumped. A small gouge to the lower edge of the rear board. Missing the front free endpage, the book opens to the title page. Some foxing scattered in text; generally light but heavier to the first 10 or so leaves. Three or four pages with evidence of a folded corner. The first page of Davenport's Narrative has been corner creased with some stress and two short tears to the page tip. Overall a solid and neat copy in better condition than usually found of this important set of primary accounts of western actions in the war of 1812. The 4th edition, after the very scarce 1812, 1813 and 1834 edition. This example has a several page catalog of Lippincott Grambo titles appended at rear; paged 29 - 36. Howes D73; Sabin 18602. VG-

12mo 7" - 7" tall; 428 pages; 2nd edition issued by this publisher. (First was in 1828). Soundly bound in original full calf leather with a chipped morocco title label to spine. Label is missing the front 1/3 with reamining lettering - Ameri / Constitu/ - . Prior owner's mid 19th century (Ohio) bookplate mounted to front pastedown; an adhesion abrasion/chip to the front endpage. Endpages complete. An early leaf has a closed horizontal tear across the page which we have mended with archival japanese tissue paper. Leather is lightly surface rubbed at spine with a few tiny pits to the surface and the spine ends a little thin and rubbed. Just light shelf rubbing to leather at board edges and surfaces. Includes the Declaration, Constitution of the US with amendments and the constitutions of the first 24 states ending with Missouri. Solid clean copy in original binding. VG thus

1822; Plans and engravings; 7 folding; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 334 pages; Hardcover in what appears to be the original trade cloth binding of pebbled green cloth - with paper title label at spine specifying the publisher's price for editions in cloth. Front board detached; all cloth surfaces complete. Damp mottling/soiling to the top 1.5 inches of the upper board, not showing any effect to the endpages or contents. Unusual pagination conforms to the usual [5], 10 - 334 p. Illustrated with 5 plans, 1 folding and 14 engraved plates, 6 folding. Some woodcuts in-text. Final two pages of the book, the appendix, are detached and laid in. Some of the plates with moderate foxing and toning, with expected offset to adjacent pages. Light soiling to some scattered pages. First several leaves are a little furred at the front edge. Bookplate of R W Tyson to the front pastedown. A set of three thread holes in the gutters of the last several signatures suggest an earlier reapir or attempt to secure the now loose last two pages. Perhaps was recased with original cloth early 20th century. Scarce in original cloth - though wanting restoration which could be easily enough accomplished with a rebacking. Good only thus

Uniformly bound in mid 19th century speckled calf with black leather title and volume labels to spine. Mixed imprints with 7 volumes (five 1st editions) published with the Hilliard imprint; Vols II, III & IV with the Tappan & Dennett imprint dated 1844. Handsome and well preserved set with only minimal rubbing to leather at edges. Spines darkening; some rubbing and cracking to black leather labels. All volumes retain half-title pages; coated yellow ensheets are clean and intact. Some scattered foxing, here and there moderately heavy but generally pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with engraved plates and maps, some folding; some frontispieces. Tide line across the bottom corner of the lower board of Volume I - no damp evidence to any pages. Vol 2nd: Blank, Title, [6], 88, [6], bl., half-title, A-Q (plates), [4] pp. Lacking 18 of the 168 plates called for. Present are 135 of 151 numbered plates in the primary album and 15 of 17 of the lettered plates in the Appendix album. Lacking are plates numbered 35, 56, 71, 72, 73, 92, 95, 107, 112, 122, 124, 128, 129, 134, 148, 151 along with J and R of the lettered plates. Bound in heavy calf, presumably an early 18th century rebinding, with a later 18th century backing. Leather from top and bottom most compartments of the spine chipped away and lacking. Leahter boards scuffed and rubbed with some mild worming. One plate loose and laind in and another starting - both a little furred at front edge where protruding. Expected scattered toning, spotting and mild foxing with a few minor paper burn spots. Catalog bookplate of noted bibliophile and collector, James Moores Ball, to front pastedown and an 1827 auction note in manuscript. First blank only tenuously bound in and soiled. Imperfect copy, lacking front matter text to the 1st volume and a number of plates as specified.

Mounted to the front pastedown is the armorial bookplate of Thomas Falconer with four lozenges below the shield indicating earlier Falconer lineage; below this is mounted a later bookplate of Joseph M. Gleason. Snugly bound in bright clean vellum with just mild shelf rub to extremities. Almost imperceptible to the base of the spines are the impressions of a library catalogue numbers, though there are no library attachments or stamps, only a small 5 character number stamp on the versos of the title pages. Expected but mild scattered foxing; brown totning to the pages around the text block of most of the text. A handsome and well preserved example. VG+ ...
