Square snug and neat in publisher's blue cloth with title lettering in orange to spine. Wraparound pictorial dust jacket is a little sun faded at spine but crisp and sharp at edges and corners. Top stain slightly faded; expected light, uniform tanning to war time paperstock used for the text block. Solid, neat and attractive. NF/VG

48mo 3˝" - 4" tall; No date given; circa 1845-1855. Publisher's original green cloth with gilt floral bordering and titles to spine, an ornate gilt bordered "classical" theme illustration to cover board and embellishments in blind to rear board. Small format, about 3.5 inches in height. All edges gilt. 2 volumes bound as 1. Binding snug and contents neat. Engraved frontis illustration for both volumes, tissue guard missing from the frontis for the first volume. Mild rubbing and flaking to gilt designs to cover and spine. Still a very solid and attractive example of this near-miniature edition of Heman's works. VG

Cloth at spine sunned to a dull brown but gilt title lettering still bright. Binding a little shaken; a short inch long closed tear to the binding cloth from the top of the front joint. Contents clean and neat though there is some light foxing to the frontis engraving and facing title page. Prior owner name penned neatly to front endpage. Sound and reasonably decent. G+ ... Facsimile covers, manuscript & photographs; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 996 pages; 1st US issue of this extra-illustrated Memorial Edition edited by B. W. Matz. No date given at front, this edition is made up from plates printed by T. And A. Constable, Edinburgh. The title page is a cancel with the Lippincott masthead imprint added for the exported US edition. The binding design matches that of the 1911 Chapman & Hall London edition save for the change to Lippincott in lieu of Chapman at the base of the cloth spines. Dark blue cloth with double blind ruled borders to boards; elaborate decorative title design in gilt to spine with the CD monogramed letters framing the JF inner monogram, repeated to the upper board at center. This Memorial edition issued from Forster's revised edition text but with substantial additions collected by Matz including numerous facsimile wrapper designs from 1st edition Dickens, titles, portrait reproduction, photographs of locations and persons etc. Both volumes snugly bound and neat with mild shelf rub apparent to cloth at tips and light crimping and superficial stress at spine ends. Xxxiv, 481, [1]; xxvi, 515 pp. Errata sheet tipped in between xxii and xxiii in Vol I. Handsome set in the uncommon 1st US edition - printed and bound in England using a Lippincott imprint on a cancel title page. Overall VG+ ... Uniformly bound in ribbed, royal blue cloth; gilt and black title bands to spine rubbed and largely effaced - as is usually seen in this edition. Contents bright and fresh, printed on laid paper and embellished with several engraved illustrations in each volume. Mild bumping to the lower front corners each volume. Slipcase is worn with partial splits to lower joints and paper rubbed from the surfaces of the open end.
