Irving, Washington The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gentleman: Van Tassel Edition New York G P Putnam's Sons At the Knickerbocker Press 1899 reprint Hardcover Good+ Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 609 pages; The Van Tassel edition was a deluxe edition prepared by Putnam's that went through several printings in the late 19th century. Two volume HC set handsomely bound in cream colored cloth with beveled board edges and ornate gilt and blue border and center designs to cover boards and spines. Top edges gilt; other edges untrimmed. Printed on heavy paper with decorative design of green and red foliated borders on each page. Tissue guarded plates from illustrations by Rackham, Darley and many others. Cream cloth a little grubby/shelf soiled. Cloth lightly rubbed at board edges; spines a little toned. Chief among the flaws is a title page in Vol II that is partially cracked in the gutter and almost detached, apparently the result of stiffened glue from the tipped in tissue guard. A few superficial yawns in the internal binings between signatures, Still attractive and sound save for the unfortunate nearly loose title page in Vol II. G++ or better. ...
