Though most of the stories found in the original paperback were included in the 1968 Delacorte "Welcome to the Monkeyhouse" - this edition is the 1st HC edition of Canary as originally published. Uncommon in the 1st Buccaneer printing and especially so in such well preserved condition.

Rebound in heavy library grade buckram cloth; titles blocked brightly in gilt to spine. Soundly bound with original pale yellow endpages bound in. Several plates bound in irregular order with accompanying Dickens descriptive text leaves not facing the designated character plate. Ex-library copy with ctalog label at base of spine and minimal institutional attachments to endpages. Plates are bright and clean with just mild occasional foxing here and there to some scattered plates. Made attractive by the sturdy rebinding though suffering from aesthetic appeal by ex-library indications. Good only thus. ... Scarce 1st American edition of the young Lanham's 1st novel written based on his own experiences aboard and ashore while serving on a period sea tramp.

Published by Blackwood in a much more ambitious and pleasing manner than the American edition issued by Harper in the same year. Printed with an attractive and accomodating font with good margins and space around the text, compared to the Harper two-column minutiae that compresses the work into one volume of 150 pages. Each volume seperately paged and chaptered. Vol I: xviii, 285 pp. Vol II: 256 pp. Vo III: 272, [4] pp. Bound in original textured red cloth bords. This exampe deaccesioned from a University Library. 2 volumes with period rebacking prior to library ownership hve presserved the original spines over the replaced cloth. Vol 2 has had a more crude rebacking with a heavy red cloth tape application. All volumes with painted call letters to spine and library ink stamps to edges of pg blocks. Library book plates and blind stamps to prelims. Prior ownership of John Airey (Newlands) in manuscript to the front endpage, each volume. Soundly bound and complete. Uncommon in the English language editions. Overall G+ or better
