Mild toning to paperstock. 4 page section including title page portrudes slightly from fore edge. This copy complete, including original floral decorated endpages and original photographic print of the Fitch homestead in Coventry Conn. Tipped in on page 34. Boards rubbed at corners and spine ends. Binding a bit shaken but generally sound with no loose or missing pages. A previous owner has made extensive additions and a correction or two to pages 99-101, in the matter of descendants of Rev James Fitch through the lines of his sons Nathanel and Joseph. Additions total perhaps 30 names in total with several notations of marriage. Errata sheet pasted in on rear endpage. Sound if a bit fragile and exceedingly uncommon in the original edition. Noteworthy additions in a period hand. Good

Uniformly bound in mid 19th century speckled calf with black leather title and volume labels to spine. Mixed imprints with 7 volumes (five 1st editions) published with the Hilliard imprint; Vols II, III & IV with the Tappan & Dennett imprint dated 1844. Handsome and well preserved set with only minimal rubbing to leather at edges. Spines darkening; some rubbing and cracking to black leather labels. All volumes retain half-title pages; coated yellow ensheets are clean and intact. Some scattered foxing, here and there moderately heavy but generally pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with engraved plates and maps, some folding; some frontispieces. Tide line across the bottom corner of the lower board of Volume I - no damp evidence to any pages. Maps, portraits and views; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 1948 - 1954. Charles Scribner. Six volume set, all that were written by Freeman, thus complete. First five volumes are 1st printings with Colophon and Scribner A on copyright page and are all slipcased, as issued. Vols I & II in a unique slipcase with pictorial paper title labels, as are Vols II & IV. Volume V in a single volume slipcase with matched pictorial and typographic attachemts. Volume VI lacks the Scribner A but was printed in 1954, also lacking a lipcase. Uniformly bound in navy blue cloth with title designs brightly in gilt to spines. Uniformly bright, snug and clean; illustrated with maps, portraits and views. Volume I has a few small white drip spots to the spine; Vol II & III with a single such drip spot. Mild handling soil to boards of first two volumes. The two volume slipcases are a little rubbed at edges with partial splits at one or two seams reinforced with archival paper tissue tape. An overall handsome and well preserved set, lacking only the last volume published posthumously and written by others. VG+ in near VG slipcases. ...
