61 Boccaccio, John The Novels And Tales Of The Renowned John Boccacio [decameron] The First Refiner of Italian Prose: Containing a Hundred Curious Novels, by Seven Honourable Ladies, and Three Noble Gentlemen, Framed in Ten Days
London Awnsham Churchill 1684 Fifth Edition Leather Fair
4to 11" - 13" tall; 483 pages; 1684 Awnsham Churchill, London. "5th edition" [London]. 4to. In near contemporary leather spine with later probably 19th century repairs. 1/2 leather over drab paper covered boards. Leather splitting over joints but cords holding. First 4 leaves, including engraved frontis and title page are only tenuously attached. Title and dedication page damaged with a uniform swath of the top 3 inches of the two leaves torn away - presumably to remove ownership inscriptions. (16) 483 pp. Boards heavily rubbed at edges with rough abrasion and surface loss along the top edge of the lower board. Leather at spine darkened with some crazing and loss of gilt detail in the ruling and title tooling. Damage to title and dedication leaves but otherwise textually complete. Expected light general toning and occasional spotting to text. Mounted to rear pastedown is the engraved bookplate of the Folthrop Royal Brighton Library (circa 1830's). Margins thin but without any encumbrance on the text or readability. Wing B3378. Fair to Good only. With all faults. ... 77 Broster, Dorothy Kathleen and Taylor, G[Ertrude] W[Inifred] Chantemerle, a Romance of the Vendean War
New York Brentano's 1911 Second Printing Hard cover Very Good+
8vo 8" - 9" tall; 528 pages; Brentano's; 1911. 2nd Brentano's printing, from UK sheets printed at the Edinburgh Press. Original light, bright green cloth with titles boldly and brightly stamped in white to cover and spine. Square, solid and very neat copy of Broster's 1st novel, written in collaboration with her college friend, Gertrude Taylor. Very uncommon example from the year of the novel's 1st appearance. Broster was one of the first few woman students at Oxford; her later novels, including the Jacobin trilogy, have remained popular and widely read through the 20th century. This example is slightly shaken in the spine, has a superficial-almost imperceptible-drip outline to the cover board and a small indent from a foreign object on the inside surface of the front board. Corners sharp and unrubbed. A very handsome copy, and exceptionally uncommon in such an early example. Coauthor's initials correctly listed as G. W. On title page but mistakenly detailed as "C. W" in the stamped titling to the cover board. Lovely copy. VG+
