64 Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth and Bertha M. Schaeffer (Ills) There Was a Little Girl [And She Had a Little Curl...]
New York R. Worthington 1883 First Edition Hardcover Good
Oblong 8vo 8" to 9" tall; 1883 R. Worthington. HC. 1st and only 19th century edition attributed to Longfellow. Oblong format HC backed in green cloth with chromolithograph illustrated paper covered boards. An iconic childhood verse in a very scarce edition. The boards and their chromo illustrated surfaces are in generally good condition with some rubbing at edges. General light toning to surfaces and some silverfish predation along the spine-side edges of the paper overlay. Contents are complete, with each set of facing pages featuring a chromolitho pictorial lettered headpiece to a set of decorative color lettered lines, facing a page with a bold silhouette illustration. Front and rear endpages are detached but laid in. Silverfish predation at the pastedown edges, both front and rear and a little less so to the (detached) endpage edges. Contents clean and with no silverfising of note; some trace evidence of a child's pencil scribblings at the endpages. Longfellow credited as the author in this edition, and though there is some scholarly dispute regarding the origin of these classic lines, it is from the pen of Longfellow that we know them. [There was a little girl, Who had a little curl, Right in the middle of her forehead. ] When she was good, She was very good indeed, But when she was bad she was horrid. This example retains all of its elements but would be well improved with some basic restoration. Rare in the marketplace with no copies appearing at auction in recent memory. Only a handful of copies held institutionally. Good only but with considerable room for improvement in qualified hands. W. A. F. Good only

66 Luther, Martin Biblia, Das Ist: Die Ganze Gottliche Heilige Schrifft, Alten and Neuen Testaments, Nach Der Deutschen Uebersetzung Dr. Martin Luthers, Mit Jedes Capitels Kurzen Summarien, Auch Beygefugten Vielen Und Richtigen Paralellen
Somerset [pa. ] Friedrich Goeb 1813 First Edition Leather Very Good
Folio 13" - 23" tall; Folio, 33cm. 2 p. L. [1]-527[1] [1]-66 p. , 1l. , 1-169[1]p. A handsome and well preserved copy of this rarity of early American Bible printing. Goeb’s Bible was printed in 1813 in “frontier” America, on a press carried in pieces by mule over the Allegheny Mountains. It is bound in original full calf over wooden boards; spine in six panels with five raised bands. Remnants only of original clasps and straps present. All endpages are present and intact. Text in two columns. Includes Old and New Testaments with separate title pages. Apocraphya is between Testaments and is separately paged. Not often found in such well preserved condition, this copy has had only minimal restoration to the front hinge. A professional and sympathetic mend was effected using archival material. The intact cords were strengthened. Original leather rubbed at edges and corners, with light surface scarring - but much less so than in copies usually seen. Front several pages have a vertical crease near the gutter. Scattered foxing and toning. First several leaves with furred edges and several minor margin tears. A last leaf of recommended readings, Anweisung der ... Episteln und Evangelien, is not present – though there is no evidence of any missing page. Perhaps this copy in a state bound without this final leaf. An impressive feat of printing accomplished at the edge of settled early North America - in a handsome example. An important American Bible. Uncommon in any condition but scarce in such a well preserved example. A VG copy. Shaw & Shoemaker, 27883. ... Auction records record a bruised and well worn copy selling in 1999 at Swann’s Auction House in New York for $1000. An impressive feat of printing accomplished at the edge of settled early North America - in a quite handsome example. Scarce in any condition but quite rare in such a nicely preserved example.
