8vo 8" - 9" tall; 386 pages; Publisher's pebbled brown cloth with decortive rules in blind to boards gilt title lettering dulled at spine. Front endpage and half-title missing, probably removed because of personal inscription. The first leaf is the title page. Cloth at spine chipped from crown to the height of the text block; fraying and rubbing at tail. Damp line along the top edge of the entire book and in the gutters of the first few leaves. Offset red stain to the front edge of the rear board. Binding slightly cocked. Contents complete, including the 10 page cataloge of Saxton titles at rear. A worn but serviceable 1st edition copy. Greeley composed the book as a series of letters published in the New York Tribune and issued as a book at the conclusion of his travels. Good ony

Shallow chipping and nicks to cloth at spine ends; board corners tapped with mild abrasion to cloth at tips. Light foxing to front and rear endpages, but text pages bright and clean with a few period pencil annotations observed. Illustrated with woodcut plates, one folding plan of Dartmoor Prison. Essentially the entire annual is devoted to the Holmes monograph on Native American Pottery in the Eastern United States. Profusely illustrated with lithographs. Photographs and color lithographs. Stout oversized volume in original olive green cloth; title lettering to spine and ecorative pictorial figure of a Native American are wortked into the cloth in gilt. Cloth at spine ends rubbed and thinning with mild fray at base of spine. Gilt titling at spine a bit dulled but readily legible. Binding sound and contents generally neat. Prior owner bookplate to front pastedown and a subsequent note of ownership same. Bok was probably stored in a humid setting. Mustiness that will fade over time. About 4 or so adjacent plates had mild adhesion but have been separated with only two having a small area of skinnin to a pictorial area. By and large a decent copy. Includes hundreds of illustrations, 7 plates in color and a folded two page map. Good only copy. ... Oversize book will require additional charges for expedited or international shipping.
