This copy was rebound - presumably from a paper covered original - in full balck calf with the owner's name in gilt to cover board and with chained gilt borders to board edges. Spine perished and missing; boards detached. Text/page block sound and complete. Pages printed double column with numerous woodcut illustrations scattered in text. Scattered toning, spotting and handling soil to pages; a few scattered pages with errant pencil strokes (a child's? ). Still a solidly bound text block that would be restored without difficulty. Good only at best thus. Scarce in early copies - this Reconstruction era travelogue novel narrative earned considerable praise and interest upon publication.
