Taking Tales; Chromolitho vignette, frontis engraving; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 63 pages; Circa 1887 published in London by Griffith and Farran as a "Re-issue in sixpenny volumes" and apparently licensed to E P Dutton for American sales. Originally printed in the late 1860's as one of twelve "Taking Tales for Cottage Homes" to supply the "cottagers and humbler classes ..and poorer populations" with "ideas and vocabulary suited to their comprehension..." A very handsome slim volume in blue cloth with ornate pictorial and decorative border designs stamped in black to the cover. There is inset to the cover a small chromolithograph illustration of Victorian era children at play. Slim spine unlettered, as issued. Illustrated with an engraved frontis and two smaller engravings in-text. Publisher's descriptive catalogue printed to the pastedown at front with additional Griffith catlogues to rear endsheets and pastedown. Solid clean copy has a gift inscription to "Bennie Weitzel" on his 10th birthday, 1891, placed in Lancaster PA. Short run in the cloth along the spine edge, front. Expected mild toning to page stock, but overall very bright and neat. A very attractive example of one of the individual volumes in this Kingston authored series. Scarce. VG+
